英语就是这样(33)……….单数 (Singular)或复数 (plural)

一些英语的名词会令初学者迷惘因为在他们的脑海里，名词尾端如有“S”或“ES”就是属于复数的。其实不然，有些英语的复数名词尾端是没有“S”和“ES”让我们来辨认的。

例子：people, police, following, data 等等。

以上的名词是与“ARE”或“WERE”来配对的。如

1. People are here to welcome the Prime Minister

2. Police were being sent to control the crowd.

3. The following are the names of the students to be given awards.

4. Data are to be correct and accurate.

Following 是“以下”的意思，从词句中就可看出是复数因为“以下”或“following”是指超过一位或一个。

Data 是“Datum”的复数名词。在日常生活中，我们很少用单数 (Singular) 的“Datum”因为我们要的“datum”都是超过一个的所以就顺理成章的用了“data”，结果忽视“Datum”了。

“Datum”还有另一个意思。它是指一个规模或操作固定的起点。
