The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) should have comprehensive and non-contradictory measures.

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) said cars illegally parked on pedestrian walkways, handicapped parking lots and bicycle lanes would face the three-fold increment in penalty. With this, errant motorists in Penang will be slapped with heavier compounds from RM30 to RM100.

MBPP councilor Joseph Ng said the hike in penalty was necessary as it was a detergent against irresponsible motorists. The move by MBPP is laudable as making all pavements, walkways clear and smooth en route creation of friendly and safety environment are what Penangites longing for.

However, MBPP failed to disclose to “ is MBPP going to stop issuing temporary licenses for hawkers setting up their stalls on the pavements and pedestrian walkways during the festival seasons such as durian harvesting season ? “ Roads and streets in Penang mostly are narrow and ample with junctions and traffic lights, temporary stalls on the pedestrian walks add much woes to congested traffic , the safety of the road users are at stakes. Additionally, many talks and assurance by the MBPP to create friendly , safe and accessible routes and transportation for all road users particularly the disabled people have been emphasized, issuance of temporary license for stalls on the pedestrian walkways is not only contradictory but also a mockery of penalizing on those vehicles parked on the pedestrian walkways.

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) should have comprehensive and non-contradictory measures.
