Lim Kit Siang,, a controversial figure in Malaysia politics

Lim Kit Siang, a household name of democracy fighter in Malaysia, is going to celebrate his 75th Birthday. He is also recognized by many as a leader of Opposition. Is he a respected politician? Maybe to those especially those youngsters who don’t really understand his political background, the answer is “YES”, but to me, the answer is definite “ NO”.

He is just a symbol of mockery of freedom of democracy in Malaysia. He has many controversial issues and is a person without any principles. His only success to date is his ability to fuel the anger of the rakyat with his manipulated speeches and talks .

In the 70’s, a local Chinese newspapers “Malayan Tong Pau “ or “马来通报”published on its front page that some leaders of Democratic Action Party(DAP), including Lim Kit Siang, had a closed door meeting with the late President of Malaysian Chinese Association(MCA), Tun Tan Siew Sin, for the dissolution of DAP with a condition that a few ministerial posts be given to the then leaders of DAP . However, the requests were turned down and rejected by the late Tun Tan. If the negotiation had been successful, the so-called respected opposition leader fighting for democracy would not have existed today.

In the late 70’s, Lim Kit Siang caught the public attention when he, as an editor of The Rocket, disclosed that there was a scandal of RM1.2 billion involved Esso. However, no one knew and still does not know how the case was settled. Has he owed the rakyat an explanation how the case could be settled?

From the eccentric acts of Lim Kit Siang, we can see how he fully uses “democracy “ for his personal gains in the election system of Malaysia. He has the tendency to shift base or electoral district to the despairs of his supporters and voters. He had contested in many electoral districts and this may be a Guinness book of World Records “ in Malaysia politics. He had contested in Kota Malacca, Penang Tanjung, Penang Bukit Bendera, Perak Ipoh Timur and Johor Gelang Patah for parliamentary seats and for the seats of State Assembly, he had contested Kubu and Bandar Hilir, Malacca, and Kampong Kolam, Padang Kota, Tanjung Bungah, Kebun Bunga of Penang. So 5 parliamentary seats and 6 state assembly seats, were a feat to him but a mockery of democratic process in our election system. The running away from one electoral district to another was an obvious shrinking of his responsibility and avoiding further rejection of the voters.

In 1990, when Lim Kit Siang defeated the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu in Padang Kota for the seat of Penang State Assembly, he declared that he would donate his monthly pension received from the Malacca State Assembly for the establishment of Education Fund for the poor. From 1990 till to date, nothing has been ever said and declared by him the existence of this so-called Education Fund.

It is not difficult to know and see the many controversial and contradictory actions of the so-called respected politician ( not qualified to be a statesman ), if one would not be easily fooled. Just quote one, when Anwar Ibrahim was in UMNO, he was the target of attacks of Lim Kit Siang. But what happen today? You can just see and comment yourself?
