The basic requirements for accessibility for body disabled people or OKU is free and convenience.
The disabled people should be always given minimum disturbance and maximum convenience in their movement. Shopping malls are required to build ramps for free and convenient movement and transportation for OKU. With ramps, the wheel chairs can be moved easily , freely and conveniently.
However, some shopping malls in Penang demolished the well-built ramps and replaced with inclined wheel-chair lift. This has caused much inconveniences to OKU or disabled people. The wheel-chaired people have to phone the Management, wait for the person-in-charge to operate the lift when they want to enter the mail. Upon finishing their visits, they again have to phone them for their departure.
The Local Authorities have to enlighten the public the meaning of “ accessibility “ when implementing their so-called friendly and freely environment for those bodily disabled people.
