Penang Hot air balloon Fiesta

Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is back and the venue of the event at the Polo Ground once again becomes disputed. The point of argument is the imminent traffic jam which may impede the smooth accessibility of the ambulance along the routes to Penang General Hospital which is just a stone’s throw away.

The organizers and the authorities had reiterated that measures would be taken to control the traffic and alleviate any congestion for the ease of public.

However, both disputes focused mainly on the traffic problems on the roads but missed the important use of the Polo Ground for landing by helicopters during the emergency. Polo Ground is near the Penang General Hospital and it is an ideal landing place for helicopters to ferry patients during emergency.

Few years back, some dialysis centres in Perlis and Kedah were affected by floods, helicopters were used to ferry the kidney patients by landing on the Polo Ground.

Obviously, there is a lack of concept of emergency management by the Penang government. Because of this, we have seen open spaces around the high-rise buildings including the Penang Icon, Komtar, and some shopping malls are either converted into shopping lots or VIP parking lots. These spaces are meant for Assembly points for inhabitants and visitors during emergency. Where are they going to assemble during emergency?

There is 还是there are？？？

“There is a boy and a girl.”“ There are a boy and a girl.”这两句那个对？

其实。这两段句子是简要，它们应是：“There is a boy and there is a girl.”

There is an apple and two oranges 对还是 There are an apple and two oranges 对？

这两段句子也是英语的简略。它们应是 There is an apple and there are two oranges.

但是如果把apple和 oranges调转，它可写着 There are two oranges and an apple.

英语的文法是与( LAW OF PROXIMITY)接近法有关 ,它的VERB TO BE (verb to be 的动词)是根据最接近的名词为主：

例如：

1．There is a vase and two pots. 句子中的Vase 接近VERB TO BE (verb to be 的动词)是 SINGULAR单数，所以用 is

2．There are two pots and a vase. 句子中的pots 接近VERB TO BE (verb to be 的动词)是 PLURAL 复数，所以用 are。

但须记住，以上的原本的句子是 There is a vase and there are two pots 和There are two pots and a vase.

大选近，课题多！

对于前副首相兼土团党主席慕尤丁表态拒绝在执政后承认统考之事是否是媒体错误报导还是慕尤丁受到友党的责备后来了一个急弯否认有此一事，这并不重要。关键是政治人物的有着很低很低的诚信度。政客的素质就是善变和狡辨，他们会因选民市场的需求不时改变自己的立场来符合他们的私利。统考课题再次被提起，那是因为它有选民市场，对在野党它有吸票的功能，可左右选民的情绪。大选将近，华社与华教课题会冉冉出现在媒体。原因很简单，因为一切有关华社的问题已成为季节性的热门话题，有很大的华社市场。每近大选，每相隔约五年，华社所面对的问题是小题大作，大题狂吵，始终不见解决，还是处于只听到雷声，不见雨水。靠华社问题上岸作官的政客，当官掌权的时期，又再旧情复发，善忘症又上身，忘了华社的问题，忘了华教难题。旧情复发后，不再大声喊，不再大声叫。养精蓄锐，束身自好等待另一个五年的到来，又再扮演“人民英雄”,“华教斗士”在民间出现。

相信在不久的日子，应该是很快，华社与华教问题又成为热门课题了。华小的经费不足，师资不足，双语课程等等不是五年才发生一次。而是每年的问题。但很可悲的是，华教课题已变为季节性课题，每隔约五年才来谈，才来重点出击。这就是我国华社的悲哀。

独立约六十年的我国，华社尤其是华教问题日趋复杂和难解；难于解决的根源是它已沦为政治炒作课题。举个最近的例子，麦当劳快餐连锁店禁止无清真认证蛋糕的事件会在媒体介发酵被炒作成为民间话题的理由不是因为我国有许多不平则鸣的人士而是因为第十四届全国大选不远了，话题变课题，课题成为热题后，在民间呼应相互成为焦点后，有人会因此在其党内出位！

Dentists or Orthodontists ?

Public concerns were raised on the professionalism in medical practice after two incidents of botched circumcision. To alleviate public worry and anxiety, Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reiterated that action would be taken against general practitioners and health professionals who perform circumcision without the necessary training.

Subsequently, the two doctors involved had been referred to the Malaysian Medical Council for investigation, as disclosed by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam last week.

There is another field of medical practice which also needs the attention of the Health Ministry.

There is a trend in dental clinics where dental doctors offer orthodontic treatment in addition to their normal dental treatment. This is, of course, an additional venue and choice for the patients as there are limited orthodontic clinics in our country.

However, do the patients who need orthodontic treatment really understand the difference between dentists and qualified orthodontists? Therefore, finding a great dental practice is challenging as most patients are limited in their ability to evaluate the quality and professionalism of types of dental work.

I can still recall what the president of the Malaysian Orthodontic Practitioners Association, Dr Kathiravan Purmal, had said: “Any general dentist can carry out orthodontic treatment as it is allowed under the Dental Act (1971), as orthodontic treatment is within the scope of practice of a general dental practitioner. The role of general dentists is to manage non-complicated orthodontic cases and refer the complicated ones to orthodontists.”

It is clear from the statement that, for the complicated cases, the dentists should act professionally and refer the patients to orthodontists.

If a substantial amount of dental work is unavoidable, getting a second opinion may be worthwhile. One can ask dentists to show he or she the “before” and “after” photographs of patients who have undergone similar treatments. Another important factor to consider is the high fee, including the provision of advanced services such as Invisalign.

To the general public, the above would not be in their knowledge unless they are professionally advised.

Clearly, there is a need for guidance in the dentistry field from the authorities.

Traffic Jam

Johore is the place where most of Malaysian pineapples are grown and with this produce, Johore is also famous for pineapple jam.

Perak is the place where Menglembu groundnuts are grown. In Malaysia, most peanuts are of Menglembu. Therefore, Perak Ipoh or Menglembu are famous for peanut butter jam.

Penang is the place where roads and streets are narrow. Pedestrian walks are dangerous for pedestrians to walk as most of pedestrian walks in town are inserted with bicycle lanes or illegal and legal stalls. During peak hours , weekends and public holidays, all roads and streets are congested with traffic. Penang is famous for its traffic jam.
